Why cars engines are getting smaller while bikes engines are getting bigger?

I mean in the 60s the biggest b@d@$$ motorcycle was the Triumph Bonvillie with 650cc air cooled parallel twin engine and I have heard numerous times from old citizens that there was a saying "you don't need anything bigger than 250cc". While cars used to be really big! I've not much knowledge about vintage cars but all of them used to had about 4.0L engine minimum.
Now as of 2013. 650cc bikes with modern technology like fuel injection, liquid cooling, high compression ratios and other electronics aids are considered beginner bikes (I'm looking towards Suzuki SV650 and Ninja 650R) even though they're lighter and also have more power than the old Bonvillie. While at the same time a car with anything over 2.0L engine considered BIG!
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?

Motorcycles used to be seen as transportation devices, alternative to a car. In fact there was a time, very early in the 20th century, when motorcycles outsold cars because cars were so expensive.

In the 1950s/60s yes, people used to say there was no need for a motorcycle to be bigger than 250cc. Because in those days 'highways' were 45-50 mph. In those days, people used to routinely cross continents on 250cc singles and twins. 250cc is all the motorcycle you will ever need up to about 50 mph. Above that they're dicey.

So you need at least 500-650cc to cruise at modern highway speeds. Also motorcycles today (in the western world anyway) are seen as recreational devices, not transportation devices. One of the nicest things about motorcycling is that rush of power you feel when you twist the grip, and it's just a lot more fun on a bigger bike. So today, in the US and Europe, 650cc is seen as 'medium sized'.

In poorer, more crowded countries. 125cc is still a very popular size. I don't think you can even buy a 125cc streetbike in the US, but we see a lot of posts here from India asking which 125 is the best and listing half a dozen of them! Because in India (and Thailand and Burma and Vietnam, etc.) motorbikes are still seen as serious transportation devices. In the US that market is much smaller, and is dominated by scooters.

There's a category of motorcycles where engines are getting even bigger! For many years Harleys were 1200cc, and the 'small' Harley was 980cc. But cruisers have gotten bigger and bigger, not for speed but for low-rpm torque and stamina on the highway. Today you can buy a V-twin cruiser that's 2000cc!

Cars are different. I'm sure everyone realizes, in the back of his mind, that gas is soon going to be $6/gal in the US, and then $8 and then $10. We had a love affair with cars in the US for 100 years, but now we are more likely to see them as necessary evils, something we just need to get around. And there's just no reason a car has to be 20 feet long and weigh 6000 lbs. Also car engines have grown more sophisticated--4 valves per cylinder, OHC, computer-controlled fuel injection and ignition timing, and so forth, to get the most out of a given size, and the best compromise between power and fuel economy. The old V8 was a 'brute-force' approach.
