Did cars in the 50's and 60's regularly overheat?

It seams like the first thing anyone serious about driving their classic car adds is an electric cooling fan. Did cars in the 50's and 60's regularly overheat?

sorry harley, foreign jobs also had belt driven fans.(early years)the #1 concept behind electrics in classics would be room, and efficiency.most cars that arent original have powerplant transplants and room and alignment become an issue. electric is a way to overcome those problems.(#1 reason chevys are in t-buckets,ford small block is to tall, original fan ran off crankshaft)another reason is to gain feels like hp by taking the load off the belt drive and adding it to the electric system which runs continuously.the fan is not always needed.(clutch fan)as far as balance, the harmonic balancer or even a bad u joint can knock a belt driven water pump,it actually(if balanced)would kindof reduce the vibrations and one sided pull of the belt system.hope it helps. if you ever need it, ive got a nice 2 spd schematic thats my own design and is cheap.it is 3 position system and costs around $150-200 for off,on,and high spd.including fan and shroud.
