Advice on a motorbike and sidecar?

My husband and I have just bought a motorbike and sidecar (yamaha diversion 600 & velorex 700). We are both keen bikers but this is a whole new board game!

Even after just one ride we realise it's not going to be as straightforward as we'd first thought.

A couple of things have been suggested to us to improve the stability and handling and I'm hoping someone out there can confirm these ideas, or suggest other things to try.

1. Thicker fork oil (to stop the bouncing all over the place)
2. Streering damper (combat the wobble at low speeds)
3. Leading Link Forks (what are these for / what do they do and are they as expensive as I think they are?)

Any other help would be really appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly how did you come by the combination
who mounted the side car
Is the toe in correct for the bike
Is the Camber right for the bike.

You will need the following
a very long straight edge A length of 4x2 from B & Q will suffice
A flat car park Er B & Q again
A Datum line like the lines in a car park B & Q ?
Chalk or marker spray ( you've guessed it B & Q)
A Tape measure and plum bob B & Q

A very understanding security guard and staff with a sense of humour

Pick a quiet day park the bike so that both the bike wheels are on the datum line check they are parrallel and in a straight line.
attach the straight edge to the sidecar wheel and measure the distance from the straight edge to the datum line level with the front wheel spindle of the bike: do the same for the rear,
Rear Measurement - front measurement should be about 3/4 inch or 22mm certainly no more. This is the Toe in and helps to stabilise the bike at speed.
To check the Camber you need to have a large set square or a plumb bob.
Checking the side car wheel isn't BENT by raising it and slowly rotating it to check for wobble
If straight then lower wheel to ground and with the plumb bob on the top edge of the rim lower the weight until it is level with the lower edge of the rim. The weight should be hanging out about 1/8 an inch or 3mm No more but a little less is ok say 1/16th or 1.6 mm (10p piece rim).
You need to do the same to the bike too to check it's wheels are correct.
Most people set the bike to CAMBER towards the sidecar and the sdie car wheel straight up and down. But as you get good at riding you can adjust it to suit your style and method ( hence why you need to start with a datum)

Right now the tricky bit
If these measurements are way out or wrong you need to adjust the mounts to the bike frame to make the best of what you have
So you'll be back and forth to the washer isle to get various thicknesses of packing material ( Hence B & Q)

OK assuming that all is okay now turn your attention to the bike
M & P and BUSTERS sell uprated fork springs for the bike
you'll need to uprate the fork springs if you are keeping that front end
Thicker Fork oil is a no no it does nothing except slow the damping and as such make the jarring effect on the bars that much more.
Fit soft rubber grips and if possible riase the bars and rubber mount them ( TDM Has a rubber mounted Handlebar that should bolt on)
It the Geometry of the combination is correct then your slow speed wobble will be reduced, Though the fitting of a Steering Damper will reduce the TANK SLAPPERS at high speed.
A leading link Front Fork is a method of moving the front wheel forward of the bike without extending the fork length it increases the castor angle and so stabilizes the wheel at speed
They are extremely expensive and make the bike a PIG to ride if you go solo but they do improve the ride so much
Imagine a rear suspension set up bolted onto the front of the bike but back to front..

Tips ( sorry it is sofoooo long)
1 get a 25 litre plastic water container, when the side car is empty fill the container with water and sit it in the foot well. This will help to keep the side car wheel down when cornering. If carrying a lighter passenger like a child empty some of the water out to adjust.
this is because the suspension on the sidecar is set up for an adult so it will bounce along like an unlaiden trailer. I use collapsible camping containers as they fold up when not required and always use fresh water you never know who might want a drink :-)
Fit AVON side car tyres to both the front and side car wheel. this will improve your slow speed steering ( though most will not say about the front wheel) buy/ obtain another front wheel with a road tyre if the bike is to be used as a solo at any time, to switch it over to save embarrasing loss of traction moments.
Have SLIME or TYRE SEAL put into all tyre this will stop the flats and allow you to get home should you suffer a puncture
Always carry a foot pump or an inflator as you may need to change the pressures one of those power packs from halfords or ARGOS is ideal.
fit a small electric 12 volt heater to the sidecar. and an auxillary battery
your passengers will love you :) Carry a picnic rug too. ( I sound so sad)
Cornering IN UK with LEFTHAND SIDE CAR
accellerate into Lefthand bends and the bike will rotate around the trailing sidecar and lean heavily over the side car to keep the wheel down apply counter steering techniques in the cusp of the bend to ensure smooth transition
Dab the Rear Brake slightly on entering righthand bends and shift your weight or position back wards over the rear motorcycle wheel and decellerate and use the mass of the side car to throw the bike round the bend, be ready with the clutch as the momentum causes the bike rear wheel to lift and lose traction.
